We Humans Are Complex

In our hyperconnected world, complexity has surged, leading to heightened volatility, uncertainty, and ambiguity. This increased complexity poses significant challenges in predicting outcomes, planning for the future, and understanding global events.

We live in a hyperconnected world that has led to increased complexity.

The impact of complexity

Raised complexity, in turn, has given rise to increased:

• Volatility is where things change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse.
• Uncertainty is where it is impossible to predict the future or the correct course of action with any reliability.
• Ambiguity is where events are open to more than one interpretation and are thus confusing.

TEN WAYS IN WHICH TODAY’S WORLD IS COMPLEX

Here are ten ways in which the world has become more complex in the last 75 years:

1. The development of the Internet and the proliferation of digital technology have transformed many aspects of our lives, creating new possibilities but also adding complexity.
2. Globalization has brought many benefits but has also created new challenges, such as the need to navigate complex supply chains and the impact of economic and political events in other parts of the world.
3. The growth of the global population has contributed to the world’s increasing complexity by creating more relationships, interactions, and networks between people.
4. Advances in medical technology have improved healthcare but have also made it more difficult for people to understand and navigate the healthcare system.
5. The increasing complexity of the global financial system, with the proliferation of new financial instruments and the integration of world markets, has created new risks and challenges.
6. The rise of automation and artificial intelligence is revolutionizing many industries, but it also raises ethical and social questions.
7. Climate change and environmental degradation have become significant global challenges, requiring complex solutions and international cooperation.
8. The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction has increased the complexity of international security and diplomacy.
9. The rise of extremist and terrorist groups has created new challenges for governments and international organizations.
10. The increasing diversity of societies and the growth of multiculturalism have made it more important to understand and navigate cultural differences.

What is meant by complexity?

When I describe a system or problem as complex, I am not using the word in its everyday sense. I am referring to the principles of complexity science and complex or complex adaptive systems.

Increased connectivity has led to increased complexity, which means we cannot make sense of things, plan the future, and predict the outcomes of our actions. We are no longer in control, but then we never have been.
