The term Knowledge Café is a generic name for a conversational method that has many variations.
In this blook, I describe the way that I run a Knowledge Café, and I call this process the Gurteen Knowledge Café.
I have given it this name not so much to brand it but to distinguish it from similar processes like the World Café and other uses of the term Knowledge Café that have very different meanings.
All are different conversational methods. For example, some online forums are called knowledge cafes. The World Café, though, is very similar, although there are some fundamental differences.
If I am looking for a generic term to describe a conversational process that is broadly similar to the Gurteen Knowledge Café or the World Café, I use the term conversational café.
But when naming your conversational café when you come to run one, regardless of the process, it makes sense to think carefully about what you call it.
You can call it a conversational café, a World Café, or a Knowledge Café, a Social Café or an Innovation Café. Or maybe a Strategy Café or a Philosophy Café. Or a Marketing Café.
Whether a one-off Café or a series of Cafés, the name should be determined by the purpose and the context in which you run it. you should also consider whether calling it a Café at all is a wise move.
In many results-oriented organizations, the names I have suggested above may seem rather fluffy bunny to more hard-nosed managers. A more neutral everyday business name such as a marketing forum may be more appropriate. However, Strategy Café or Innovation Café may be acceptable.
The fundamental rule in naming a Knowledge Café is to use the dominant everyday business language of your organization.
