In “On Conversation,” an essay published in The Pennsylvania Gazette on October 15, 1730, Ben Franklin addressed the issue of people lacking the skills to engage effectively in conversation. Interestingly, Franklin’s advice focused more on being pleasant and likable rather than on cultivating deep, thought-provoking discussions.
