We humans have existed for only about 200,000 years. Yet, our impact on Earth is so profound that scientists propose a new epoch—the Anthropocene—to mark this period of significant human influence on the planet’s geology and ecosystems.
One fascinating story is how the Little Ice Age in the 1600s may have been partially triggered by reforestation in the Americas. After European diseases devastated indigenous populations, abandoned farmland gave way to forests, absorbing carbon dioxide and contributing to global cooling.
