The Nature of Consciousness The mystery of the mind

We know that the brain processes information, responds to the world, and produces extraordinarily complex behaviour. But why should any of this activity be accompanied by subjective experience? Why should seeing red, hearing music, or feeling pain actually feel like anything? This is the mystery at the heart of consciousness, and despite considerable scientific and philosophical progress, we still have no generally accepted explanation.

The mystery of consciousness

Consciousness is one of the most familiar aspects of our lives, yet also one of the most difficult to explain. Every waking moment, we experience the world around us, along with our own thoughts, feelings, and sensations. We see colours, hear sounds, feel pleasure and pain, and sense what it feels like to be ourselves.

In my post What Is It Like to Be Something?, I explore what we mean by consciousness and offer a simple working definition: Consciousness is the capacity to have experiences, not merely to detect information and respond to it.

That definition helps us understand what we are talking about, but it leaves us with a much more difficult question. How does consciousness arise? Why should the physical processes taking place in our brains be accompanied by subjective experience at all?

Scientists have made remarkable progress in understanding the brain. We know a great deal about how neurons communicate, how sensory information is processed, and how different brain systems contribute to perception, memory, attention, and behaviour. But explaining these processes is not necessarily the same as explaining why they are accompanied by experience.

This distinction lies at the heart of what philosophers call the hard problem of consciousness.

The hard problem of consciousness

The philosopher David Chalmers introduced the term hard problem of consciousness in 1995. He distinguished between what he called the easy problems of consciousness and the hard problem.

The easy problems involve explaining how the brain performs particular functions. How does it recognise objects, distinguish colours, focus attention, store memories, or produce behaviour? These are enormously difficult scientific questions, but we can imagine how research into the brain might eventually answer them.

The hard problem is different. Even if we understood every physical process involved in seeing a red rose, why should those processes produce the experience of seeing red? Why should the neural activity associated with an injured finger be accompanied by the feeling of pain?

We might eventually describe every neuron involved, every signal transmitted, and every chemical reaction taking place. But would that explain why the experience feels like anything?

That is the central difficulty. How do objective physical processes give rise to subjective experience?

Not everyone agrees that this is a separate problem. Some philosophers believe that a complete scientific explanation of the brain will also explain consciousness. Others argue that the hard problem reveals something fundamental that our current understanding of the physical world cannot account for. Still others question whether the problem has been formulated correctly.

There is no generally accepted answer.

What can neuroscience tell us?

Neuroscience has made considerable progress in identifying the brain processes associated with conscious experience. Researchers investigate what are known as the neural correlates of consciousness: patterns of brain activity that reliably accompany particular conscious experiences or states.

For example, scientists can compare brain activity when someone consciously sees an image with activity when the same image is presented but does not enter conscious awareness. They can study what happens during sleep, anaesthesia, or disorders of consciousness, and investigate how changes in particular brain networks affect what people experience.

These studies are helping us understand the conditions under which consciousness occurs and the mechanisms that may support it. They also help researchers distinguish consciousness from related processes such as attention, memory, and the ability to report an experience.

However, identifying the neural activity associated with an experience is not necessarily the same as explaining why that activity produces the experience.

Suppose scientists discovered exactly which patterns of brain activity correspond to seeing red. That would be an important achievement. But we could still ask why those particular patterns are accompanied by the experience of redness rather than no experience at all.

Some researchers believe that a sufficiently complete account of the brain’s mechanisms will ultimately resolve this question. Others believe that something important would remain unexplained.

Different approaches to explaining consciousness

Philosophers and scientists have proposed various approaches to understanding consciousness. Some attempt to explain it entirely in terms of physical processes, while others suggest that consciousness may be a more fundamental feature of reality.

These approaches are not always mutually exclusive, and they do not all attempt to answer the same questions. Nevertheless, they offer useful ways to think about the problem.

Physicalism

Physicalism holds that everything that exists, including consciousness, is ultimately physical or depends entirely on the physical world. From this perspective, consciousness does not require a separate, non-physical substance or force.

There are different versions of physicalism. Some philosophers argue that conscious experiences are identical to particular physical states or processes in the brain. Others focus on the functions mental states perform, such as processing information, guiding behaviour, and enabling an organism to respond to its environment.

One attraction of physicalism is that it fits naturally with the scientific understanding of the brain as a physical system. But it faces the challenge of explaining why particular physical processes should be accompanied by subjective experience.

Some physicalists believe that this difficulty will eventually disappear as our scientific understanding improves. Others accept that it remains a serious philosophical problem.

Dualism

Dualism holds that mind and matter are fundamentally different in some important respect. It is most often associated with René Descartes, who argued that the thinking mind and the physical body are distinct.

One form, substance dualism, holds that the mind is a non-physical entity. Other forms maintain that conscious experience has properties that cannot be reduced to physical properties, without necessarily claiming that the mind is a separate substance.

Dualism takes seriously the apparent difference between subjective experience and the brain’s physical processes. However, it raises its own difficult questions. If the mind is non-physical, how does it interact with the physical brain? And how could we investigate such an interaction scientifically?

Dualism remains an important philosophical position, although many contemporary scientists and philosophers favour approaches that do not require a separate non-physical mind.

Emergentism

Emergentism suggests that consciousness arises from the organization and interaction of simpler physical processes. The brain’s individual components may not be conscious, but when organized in sufficiently complex ways, they may give rise to conscious experience.

The general idea of emergence is familiar in other areas of science. Individual water molecules do not possess the properties of a flowing river, and individual neurons do not possess the abilities of a complete brain. New properties and patterns of behaviour can arise when simpler components interact.

The difficulty is explaining exactly how this applies to consciousness. We can understand how complex behaviour emerges from interactions between simpler components, but why should subjective experience emerge?

There are also different interpretations of emergence. Some regard consciousness as entirely explainable through physical processes, while others argue it introduces genuinely new properties that cannot be fully reduced to them.

Emergentism is therefore not necessarily an alternative to physicalism. Some versions are compatible with it, while others raise deeper questions about the relationship between consciousness and the physical world.

Panpsychism

Panpsychism offers a very different possibility. Rather than treating consciousness as something that appears only when matter becomes sufficiently complex, it suggests that consciousness, or some extremely basic form of experience, is a fundamental and widespread feature of reality.

This does not necessarily mean that rocks, atoms, or individual particles are conscious in the same way human beings are. Different forms of panpsychism make different claims about the nature and distribution of experience.

Panpsychism appeals because it tries to avoid the problem of explaining how experience could emerge from something entirely devoid of it. If experience is already present in some rudimentary form at a fundamental level, perhaps the emergence of complex consciousness becomes easier to understand.

But this raises another difficult question: how could countless simple forms of experience combine to produce a human being’s unified consciousness?

This is known as the combination problem, and it remains one of the major challenges facing panpsychism.

Panpsychism is a serious subject of philosophical debate, but it remains speculative, and no established scientific evidence shows that fundamental particles have subjective experience.

Quantum consciousness

Some researchers have suggested that quantum processes may play an important role in consciousness. One well-known proposal links quantum processes to structures within neurons called microtubules, developed by physicist Roger Penrose and anaesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff.

These proposals are intriguing because quantum mechanics describes aspects of physical reality that differ considerably from our everyday intuitions.

However, quantum consciousness theories remain controversial. It has not been established that the proposed quantum processes explain subjective experience, and invoking quantum mechanics does not by itself solve the hard problem.

Even if quantum processes were essential to consciousness, we could still ask why those processes should be accompanied by experience.

Scientific theories of consciousness

Alongside these broader philosophical approaches, researchers have developed theories that attempt to identify the mechanisms and organizational features associated with consciousness.

One influential approach is Global Workspace Theory, and its neuroscientific development, Global Neuronal Workspace Theory. The central idea is that information becomes consciously accessible when it becomes widely available to multiple systems involved in perception, memory, reasoning, and action.

Another influential approach is Integrated Information Theory, which proposes that consciousness is related to the extent and structure of integrated information within a system. It seeks to identify properties that distinguish conscious systems from non-conscious ones.

Other approaches emphasise recurrent processing in the brain, higher-order representations of mental states, or the relationship between consciousness and attention.

These theories have generated substantial research and debate. They make different predictions, and scientists are developing experiments to compare them. None has yet achieved general acceptance as a complete explanation of consciousness.

A theory may help explain when consciousness occurs, what brain processes support it, or how information becomes available for conscious use, without necessarily settling the deeper philosophical question of why those processes are accompanied by subjective experience.

Can the hard problem be solved?

One of the most interesting questions is whether the hard problem of consciousness is ultimately solvable.

There are several possibilities.

Perhaps consciousness is entirely a product of physical processes, and we simply do not yet understand those processes well enough. Future discoveries in neuroscience and related sciences might offer explanations we cannot currently imagine.

Alternatively, our understanding of the physical world may be incomplete. Consciousness might require us to revise or extend some of our fundamental assumptions about the nature of reality.

A third possibility is that the hard problem arises partly from the way we think and talk about consciousness. Some philosophers argue that once we have adequately explained the brain’s functions and our ability to describe our experiences, no additional mystery will remain.

Others believe subjective experience presents a genuine explanatory gap that we cannot close simply by describing physical mechanisms, however completely.

At present, no one agrees on which of these possibilities is correct.

What would count as an explanation?

This raises a question that I find particularly intriguing: What would it actually mean to explain consciousness?

Suppose scientists eventually develop a complete account of how the brain produces perception, memory, emotion, thought, and behaviour. Suppose they can identify precisely which processes accompany every conscious experience and predict how those experiences will change when the brain changes.

Would that amount to an explanation of consciousness?

For some researchers and philosophers, the answer would be yes. If we can explain all the relevant mechanisms and functions, then we have explained what there is to explain.

For others, something would still be missing. We might know everything about the physical processes associated with seeing red without understanding why those processes are accompanied by the subjective experience of redness.

This is what makes the hard problem so difficult. It is not simply that we lack enough information about the brain. People disagree about what kind of explanation we are looking for and what would count as a satisfactory answer.

Perhaps future science will resolve the issue. Perhaps it will require a different conceptual framework. Or perhaps some aspects of subjective experience will remain difficult to explain from an entirely objective perspective.

Why does any of this matter?

At first sight, the hard problem of consciousness may seem like an abstract philosophical puzzle with little relevance to everyday life. But the questions it raises have important implications.

If consciousness is the capacity to have subjective experiences, then understanding which beings possess that capacity matters enormously. It influences how we think about animal welfare, the treatment of people with disorders of consciousness, and the possible moral status of future artificial intelligence systems.

It also raises questions about the relationship between consciousness and intelligence. A system may solve complex problems without necessarily having subjective experience. Conversely, a creature may have relatively limited intellectual abilities while still being capable of suffering or pleasure.

This distinction is explored further in The Relationship Between Consciousness and Intelligence.

This also connects to conversation and human relationships. Each of us has a subjective inner world that other people cannot directly experience. We can observe one another’s behaviour and listen to descriptions of experiences, but we cannot literally see the world through another person’s consciousness.

Conversation provides one of the most important ways of crossing that gap, however imperfectly. By listening, asking questions, and exploring different perspectives, we can begin to understand experiences that are not our own.

This is one reason consciousness matters to Conversational Leadership. It reminds us that understanding another person involves more than collecting information about them. It involves trying to appreciate how the world appears and feels from their perspective.

We have made extraordinary progress in understanding the brain’s physical workings, yet subjective experience remains a profound scientific and philosophical challenge. It remains uncertain whether consciousness will eventually be explained through neuroscience, a new understanding of physical reality, or a different way of framing the problem. What is clear is that exploring consciousness forces us to examine some of our most fundamental assumptions about ourselves and the world.
