Comment:We had talk enough, but no conversation; there was nothing discussed.

This quotation comes from James Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson. Boswell assumed that a dinner party Johnson had attended must have produced excellent conversation. Johnson disagreed: "No, Sir; we had talk enough, but no conversation; there was nothing discussed."
Johnson was distinguishing between sociable chatter and genuine conversation. We can exchange stories, opinions, and pleasantries for hours without exploring anything in depth. For Johnson, conversation meant examining ideas together, questioning, disagreeing, and pursuing a subject with curiosity. Talk fills the silence. Conversation investigates.
