Understand the Metacrisis: Multiple crises are converging across ecological, social, and economic systems, creating the metacrisis. Traditional approaches that address problems in isolation cannot handle these interconnected breakdowns. Making sense of this complexity requires new forms of working.
We live in a time of overlapping breakdowns: ecological, social, technological, and economic. These are no longer separate or easily addressed in isolation. Together, they form what some describe as the metacrisis. This is not just a crisis within systems but between them. It is also a crisis of understanding, coherence, and relationship.
Understanding the metacrisis begins with how we speak and listen. We need to make space for different perspectives to be heard, where uncertainty is acknowledged rather than avoided, and where people can reflect together without needing to fix or explain things too quickly. In this kind of conversation, we start to notice underlying patterns—how our habits of thought, our ways of relating, and our responses contribute to the difficulties we face.
We are not standing apart from the crisis. We are in it, shaped by it, and also shaping what comes next. That means our conversations matter. The way we frame questions, the way we work with disagreement, and the way we navigate complexity are all part of how we respond.
To understand the metacrisis, we need to become more attentive to connections, more willing to stay with what is unresolved, and more open to insights that arise in the space between people. Conversation, taken seriously, becomes a way of making sense together. In times of systemic disruption, it is often through conversation that a shared understanding begins to emerge.
