What Is Knowledge in the Age of AI?
This episode explores the nature of knowledge, its distinction from information, and the role of AI in knowledge representation. Clive Holtham, Ron Young, and David Gurteen discuss whether machines can truly possess knowledge or if they only manipulate structured information.
Ron reflects on past AI developments, particularly expert systems and neural networks, suggesting that machine-generated patterns and probabilities might constitute a form of knowledge. David argues that knowledge exists only in minds, whether human or animal, while everything else remains information. The discussion touches on AI’s ability to mimic knowledge and exhibit emotional understanding through text generation.
While all three acknowledge AI’s usefulness, they express concerns about regulation, ethics, and potential misuse. They remain optimistic about AI’s benefits, especially in education and healthcare, but stress the need for governance to mitigate risks. The conversation concludes with a call for balanced development, prioritizing societal interests over corporate dominance.
