World Values Day is 21st October 2021
World Values Day is an annual campaign to increase the awareness and practice of values around the world.
It provides an opportunity to think about our most deeply held values and explore and act on them with others.
This year’s theme is Reconnecting.

What are values?
Values are the basis of our personal and collective judgments about what is important and valuable in life. They influence our decision-making on all sorts of issues, including social, environmental, and political ones.
World Values Day Virtual Knowledge
Café 21st October 2021
This year’s World Values Day Knowledge Café will be the sixth since our first one in 2016.
This year our theme is Reconnecting. We are all living through a time of enormous uncertainty and disruption. This means we need to deepen our understanding of values and how they connect us with our sense of self, others, and the wider world.
So this World Values Day, let’s use our values to reconnect with one another and with what matters most in our lives.
David Gurteen, supported by Charles Fowler, will facilitate this Knowledge Café. Our speaker Charles Savage will give a short presentation relating to the theme and pose a question.
Can this make the BIG difference needed?
Why?
-
-
- Due to the enormous uncertainty & disruptions globally
- Therefore, we need to discover the “values” to help reconnect with our sense of self, with others and the wider world?
-
Perhaps the real question of “Reconnecting” may not focus as much on just having an assortment of “Values” that we use now and then, but learning the “Art of Active Valuing” as an integral part of everyday life?
-
-
- Valuing ourselves, individually,
- Valuing all other living creatures, and
- Valuing all LIFE itself!
- Not as “STATIC OBJECTS,” in SPACE, but as and “LIVELY ENERGY” in TIME!
-
If this were so, our “VALUES” would no longer be “NOUNS” to discuss, but lively “VERBS” in action!
We are at the “confusing” entrance to the fourth era of human development, having moved through the “Hunters and Gathers Era,” the “Agriculture Era,” the “Industrial Era,” and now the “?? Era.” We talk about it as Digital, as Sustainable, as Global and more, but it still has not fully taken up a clear definition. Our present Climate Crisis may well be due to our inability to truly and deeply “value” all of Nature and all that it means.
In moving from STOD (Steady, Predictable, Orderly and Defined) to VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous), NEED we awaken in each of us our perceptive, inferential, reflective, inquisitive, conceptual, valuing and other abilities, so that we can reconnect with the insights of the Past, understand the dynamic context of the Present and help to bring real and compelling visions of the Future to life?
Rather than just “fixing” this or that, we need to reach for some profound and deeply interdependent paradigm shifts, which may include:
-
-
- Values to Valuing,
- Nouns to Verbs (building upon the wonderful uniqueness of each individual),
- Life Objects in Space to Aspirations in Time,
- Money to Meaning, and
- Anthropocene to the Ecozoic (as the context)
-
We will, together interactively, explore these and related topics to see if we can awaken an exciting and compelling vision of a WISER and more abundant FUTURE for all. This would truly be powerful “Reconnecting” that brings back meaning and purpose to this and many generations to come!
Charles Savage
Dr. Charles Savage: In spite of a long career consulting and teaching MBA and Sustainability classes in the US, Germany, Austria, India, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and elsewhere and a list of publications, Charles has been inflicted by a profound curiosity virus and awareness of how little is really known of the dynamics of life itself, like “is REALITY a NOUN or VERB - given or co-created through our interacting?” He’d welcome your observations and insights to inspire and challenge the outdated assumptions of life! Till soon!
We will then have 3 rounds of small group conversations, where we split up into small groups of 3 or 4 and go into Zoom break-out rooms to discuss the question.
Finally, we will return to the main room to share our thoughts and insights with the whole group.
